Getting around Suwa

The following resources are designed to aid tourists in exploring the Lake Suwa area.

car and taxis

Taxis are an excellent choice when visiting Suwa for the first time as drivers will often have several recommendations for tourists. If you would like a taxi driver who has passed customer service and tourism knowledge examinations, this can be arranged by contacting the tourist center. Driving yourself is another option; the rural roads around the city are fairly light in traffic, but boast beautiful scenery. There are a few rental car locations and plenty of tourist maps to help you orient yourself.

Train

Trains are the most efficient way to get around Lake Suwa. Any of the four main stations of Chino (north side), Kami-Suwa (east side), Shimo-Suwa (north side), and Okaya (west side) will typically get you within two to three kilometers of your intended destination.

Walking

Depending on the areas you choose to explore, many of the attractions and destinations can be reached on foot. This is especially true for those disembarking from Kami-Suwa Station, which is only a few minutes’ walk from Lake Suwa, as well as many historic sites, temples, museums, and sake breweries.

Cycling

Suwa was made for cycling and, with multiple cycle rental shops in the area, this is the recommended mode of transport (assuming weather conditions are good). Cycling through the city and around Lake Suwa is easy. For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, road bikes are available for exploring the mountain routes.
